Seminar Swarm Intelligence

The goal of this seminar is to study different aspects and topics in the field of swarm intelligence. Swarm intelligence is applied to investigate self-organization in simulated or actual swarms and complex systems. A major part of swarm intelligence lies within optimization with swarm inspired metaheuristics, such as Particle Swarm Optimization or Ant Colony Optimization. Some of the topics discussed in the seminar will be

  • heterogeneous swarms
  • swarm robotics
  • evolutionary processes in swarms
  • up- and downsides of diversity in metaheuristics
  • multi-objective optimization with metaheuristics 

This seminar will focus on the current advances in the area of swarm intelligence. You are welcome to propose your own topic of interest.

  • October 20th: Tutorial on how to give a technical talk. Topics are fixed. slides
  • November 17th:  3 minute presentations

  • January 5th: Topics 6, 15, and 19
  • January 12th (start at 15:00): Topics 8, 9, 12,  and 18
  • January 19th (start at 15:00): Topics 4, 11, 17, and X
  • January 26th: Topics 7, 10, and 13

Organization 

In the first session of the seminar, there will be a short introduction about swarm intelligence and different topics for the seminar will be introduced. There will be informal weekly discussion-meetings in which the students discuss about their selected topics and open issues. At the end of the semester, the students present their topics in 30-minute talks.  Specifics will be discussed in the first meeting on October 13th.

Evaluation

The students must give a 30-Minute talk about their selected topics and write a short report of 8 to 10 pages. Master students are expected to write a more detailed report of 15 to 18 pages.
